An herb is a plant that is useful either as a food, a flavoring, or as a medicine with a therapeutic affect. Herbs have the potential to bring about changes in the body. Herbs can be used for more than one purpose. For example Oregano is a great spice for food, but also has a wealth of health benefits. It can be used to treat respiratory tract disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, cramps, and urinary tract disorders. It also has anti-bacterial properties. Organic chicken owners put Oregano in their chicken feed to help fight off diseases.

Foxglove
Herbal medicine has been practiced for thousands of years, in fact written records dating as far back as 5,000 years describe herbal medicine. Many of our medications today originated from plants and herbs; in fact about 25% of the drugs prescribed throughout the world had its origin in plants. Digoxin, a medication used to treat heart disease, originated from Foxglove.
Why herbs? There are several reasons I can think of to use herbs.
- Herbal medicine has much less toxicity and fewer side effects than drugs. Adverse drug reactions cause injury or death to 1 out of 5 hospital patients.
- Herbs are much more cost-effective than drugs. You can even grow them on your own!T
- Herbs do not cause environmental devastation. Drug factories produce vast amounts of pollution. You can grow your own herbs organically without using chemicals or pesticides.
- Herbs have been around for thousands of years. There is data from hundreds of generations of herbal healers.
- Using herbal medicines enhances our emotional well-being. We are taking responsibility for our health and welfare.
